Light Commercial Vehicle MOT Testing (Class 7)

While many smaller commercial vehicles (vans weighing up to 3,000kg) are covered by the Class 4 MOT Test, a Class 7 MOT is required for commercial vehicles with a gross weight between 3,000kg to 3,500kg. One of the most important considerations when considering Class 7 MOT Testing is the available space in your workshop.

Class 7 vehicles (like the Ford Transit or Mercedes-Benz Sprinter) are bigger all-round, requiring a wider and longer vehicle lift and more headroom than most Class 4 vehicles will need.

What Equipment Should You Have for Class 7 MOT Testing?

The equipment required for Class 7 MOT testing is very similar to the Class 4 test. However, the vehicle lift needs to be bigger and have a greater lifting capacity, to accommodate a larger, heavier commercial vehicle (CV). Similarly, the brake tester must have the capacity to assess the brakes on a heavier CV; the rest of the equipment is the same.

Class 7 MOT equipment allows you to undertake Class 4 tests. So, if your workshop has the floor space and height to accommodate Class 7 vehicles, it might be worth considering the additional business opportunity this equipment offers for servicing fleet vehicles.

A typical Class 7 equipment package will include:

  • Class 7 MOT ATL Lift, including Radius Plates and Play Detectors/Shaker Plates

  • Jacking beam

  • 'Connected' Class 7 roller brake tester*

  • 'Connected' emissions analyser*

  • Headlamp beam tester

* Connected equipment is linked directly to the MOT Testing System (MTS), which saves time, input errors, and the need to print results.
